The boss had a lousy Christmas. Last Saturday night, someone stole Nash's equipment. Racks of electronic gear and some slide projectors and slide trays. This happened a week before Christmas and tonight's free Boxing Day gig for the whole family was in jeopardy of being scrapped. So much for Christmas shopping. Nash was in a desperate hurry to rent some new equipment and learn how to use it fast. The gig is more important than Christmas. It's the fall-off-the-horse mentality. We canines think of it as "you only bite a horse on the ankle once". With the help of Nash's good pal Ratch at Long and McQuade's Music, Nash gets to try out anything they have in rentals, and that's quite a selection. There is some hope that the coming gig will not be a disaster. On Christmas day, Nash goes up to his parents and I get left with Diesel. I make a big fuss for Nash not to leave me, but it's all an act. Christmas at Diesel's is an all-day feeding frenzy. At one point there are 5 canines, 2 felines, 12 humans and 1 newt all in the same house, and the devouring of food is non-stop. I'm totally pooped. The set-up was early for tonight's gig, and Nash wasn't happy without his racks. Nothing is in the right place anymore. I'm lying on the security couch guarding the stage when I hear this profanity coming from you-know-who. I'm about to crawl away when all of a sudden, Diesel's family shows up. There's Mom, Dad, the three kids and grandma plus four other pals. I'm glad to see them and Nash starts to chill out. The show was to be an early start for the kids and Nash barely makes the 7:30 deadline. As the club filled up, I was whisked upstairs to guard the dressing room. Nash performed his score to the silent film The Lost World. The kids all paid attention and the adults were sober. What a unique experience for all. During the performance of The Lost World, the house sound system decided to crap out. It didn't fail entirely, but it was serious enough that Nash announced that he would not be doing another set as planned. I came downstairs early to say good-bye to all my pals, and then Nash and I hung out and pondered the fate of the last week. There are two more presentations of The Lost World. coming up at Stratengers, this Friday, New Year's day, and Saturday, Jan. 2. Nash has to get the house sound system together. Stratengers doesn't have a house technician, and in some ways, Nash is the person in charge of such things. This is his home base, the stage he helped to build, and the sound and lights he protects from abuse. Nash is doing these gigs for two reasons. He promoted them and hates to cancel, plus he needs to work out things with the new equipment. For those interested in such detail, the new units are two GX-700's, made by Boss. From what Nash tells me they do everything but make milkbones. He says he's working on that. Digger |
