We went out to the university radio station and did an interview with Nash's pal Cory. Cory has 2 CDs of his own music that Nash plays all the time at home. Cory's music is sophisticated pop music and he doesn't realize how good he is. They end up shooting the proverbial poop and scoop on college radio and hype the gig for tonight. At 5 pm we went to the gig in downtown Waterloo, a short drive from Lou's home in Kitchener. Time Square is a large old post office building, with a tall clock tower. This is the tallest structure in downtown Waterloo. The first floor is a fine dining room and the second floor is a nice looking pub. This is where the gig is. I end up staying in the basement with the staff while Nash and Lou negotiate the steep stairs to the second floor. Nash and Lou are glad they have help loading in. This is another Art Show gig and is meant to compliment the audience Nash is developing at Club Abstract in Kitchener where he does his Rock Shows. This is a more subdued, sophisticated environment, but the turn-out is weak. It's a Thursday night, and the club has been trying something new with the live gigs, but the audience is mainly an older crowd that don't really have a reason to be there other than for a Nash show. The presentation is well-received and the staff are all eager to buy Nash CDs at the end of the night. That usually means there will be a return engagement. This room has no built-in clientele that supports or appreciates live music. There are growing pains here but Nash would like to be part of the process. Thanks to Caroline, Jody, Evan, Cliff and all the staff for dealing with a weird performer in the middle of your fine dining headspace. A very classy place. Digger |
