This is our third trip to Peterborough and The Gordon Best Theatre. This is a beautiful theatre in a city that isn't know for being very cultured. Sort of a cow-town without the cows. Maybe Toronto can send them some mooses when we're done with 'em. The Gordon Best Theatre is above The Only Cafe, a cultural eatery and mecca for the artistically displaced in Peterborough. It has a lot of regulars. Jerome is the droll proprietor who Nash has known for over 10 years. The theatre is in its third year and has become a favorite place for Nash to play. The usual gang is waiting to help us unload. Ian, Jim and Jesse make an easy task of it and I'm greeted like an old pal. The set-up goes well and we're ready for showtime. But first, it's dinnertime at The Only and Nash orders his favorite, The Club Marakesh. A triple-decker made of sweet rye bread with fresh turkey, a thick slab of gouda, slices of hard-boiled eggs, tomato, lettuce, mayo and a dash of cumin. It is impossible to describe the taste sensation of these ingredients. Nash gives me a bit of gouda just to stop my drooling. This is an early show tonight, with the film starting at 9 pm. Nash, Alex and I go out for a dump and some fetching before showtime. There isn't much to do around the club so I relax in the dressing room. Some people have brought their children to the show and Nash wonders if these kids are the next generation of fans or silent movie buffs. Either way, they won't be disappointed. The attendance is even better than last time. Nosferatu is well received but some folks have to leave before the final set of Nash Thrash. Those who remain are especially thrilled with Grinder. This evening's diverse music goes from the classical of Nosferatu to classics such as Astronomy Domine. Peterborough has an undeground audience that is worth cultivating. I have a great time meeting all the new people and we'll be back again soon. Thanks to Jerome for creating this wonderful venue. Digger |
