We are returning to a previous demon gig. As my dear readers will remember, Nash had a rough time at Raven the last time. The power failed a number of times making the show less than memorable. The power problem has been rectified and this time Nash wants to give Raven a decent showing. Tonight will be a combination of 'Art Set' and 'Pure Thrash'. After a casual set-up, Nash and the crew relax with Duane the owner and his little girl Sinead. She wants to learn to play the violin and she wants Nash to teach her! Can you imagine a bunch of Nash violin students joining the school orchestra with fuzzboxes, echoes and Marshall Amps? That would be one loud orchestra. Dinner is prepared by Duane's mom and it's a delicious homecooked meal. The gang at Raven are all very accomodating and friendly. As we wait for showtime, the usual suspects begin to arrive. There's Ordinance Bob, Suzy Slash, Frankie Venom, the gang from Rochester, Lynn and Lou as well as a whole slew of new faces. Every time Nash plays Hamilton, more people, young and old, come out to discover his music. As you have read here before, Hamilton is fast becoming Nash's favorite place to play. There are a lot of live rooms and the public is very supportive. The club is packed when Nash begins his first set. As he explains to the audience, due to the deadly heat wave, Nash will start with an all-instrumental set so as not to exhaust himself. He'll save his energy for the more aggressive second set of Thrash. The first set consists entirely of new instrumental music. None of these pieces have been released but some have been posted on MP3.com. There is a mix of slow, spacy tunes as well as fast and heavy. Some tunes will later get lyrics applied to them but this is how Nash likes to work out new material. As Nash performs, the images from the video projetor bounce upon the screen, cutting through the smoke in the room. Suddenly, something flies into the white haze of the projector and up to the screen. It flutters and dives around Nash and then exits the stage. As if in a 3-D movie, a bat has entered the club and is now part of the show. It flies back up to the stage and into the light, causing some patrons to scream with delight. This couldn't have been better staged. The only thing missing was a guest appearance by Ozzie to bite it's head off. The bat escapes unmolested and Nash finishes the set with Traum L'Orange. The second set is pure Thrash with Grinder blowing minds once again. The bat misses it's stage cue and Nash swears he'll never work with live animals again. I'm not offended because my 'flaming dog' act never really worked that well anyway. Nash encores with In-A-Gadda-Da-Nash and the crowd is thrilled. At the end of the night, Frankie, April and other friends help us load out and see us on our way. It is a comforting thought that Nash has so many fans and friends in Hamilton. Thanks again to Lloyd, Duane, Brody, John and all the staff at Raven. There are plans to do Nosferatu at this club very soon so keep watching the gig listings. Digger |
