There is little room for escapism when real life is even more bizarre.

It s even hard for me to escape into my diary without pausing to consider just what the hell does it all mean.

This isn't the place to howl so I'll just say the show must go on because there's no reason for it not to.

The Bloor Cinema is a safe place to be: with family, friends and strangers, getting lost in the communal experience of a movie, if only for an hour.

All week, there had been no rehearsals, none of the usual squawking of violin torture that sends me under the sofa.

By Saturday, Nash had to be prepared.

There was no moment of silence, no profound words to go into the history books. It was a performance to get lost to.

Nash introduced Un Chien Andalou as the very first prize-winning student film ever made.

The performance was well received and Nash then introduced Nosferatu with a short description. The audience was particularly quiet. There are a few moments of unintentional jokes in the film, which always get a big laugh. Not tonight.

At the end of the evening, Nash proceeded to the lobby to sign autographs and there was little banter from the crowd.

When we got home, Nash stayed up til dawn watching the news.
