Solo monster musicIt's been a rough summer in Toronto this year, what with the SARS virus, the Computer virus, power failures, floods, Mad Cow Disease, West Nile Disease, Rolling Stones Disease, Toronto Argonauts Disease... Is this The Apocalypse or what? The Stones concert, correction, the AC/DC concert in July was fantastic, but the public still seems reticent to venture beyond the outhouse at the back of the yard. Toronto has lost its energy, and it sold its soul to the Devil years ago. (some guy named Mel) Although Nash has stopped doing Warp-Drive Wednesdays at The Vatikan, this evening's performance is an attempt to return to normalcy. Look Toronto! It's OK to go outdoors again! Nash is playing! Cut-Throat sold out of the 'Official Nash the Slash Pre-Ionized Gauze Filters' weeks ago, but tonight's show should be virus-free regardless of the Health Department warnings. The concert is being promoted by Meridian Music and it promises to be an evening of delightful horror music. Zirco Reshife opens the evening with a solo synth performance of evil circus music. His music is both dark and whimsical, revealing a twisted personality behind this calliope of carnage. Zombi are a two-man outfit from Pittsburg, featuring Steve on bass guitar and analog synths, and Tony on drums and analog synths. The analog sounds are great to hear, so much fatter than digital, and the twisting of knobs creates monstrous swoops of sonic spontaneity. Nash belts out a set of Thrash, ending with 'Canadian Band', closing the evening with just the right amount of scary monster music. This has been a summer of survival, both on a personal level for Nash, as well as the public dealing with all the calamities that have plagued the city of Toronto for six months. We cope and we move on. Digger |
