Frank Zappa was a conductor from the Spike Jones School of Entertainment, yet he wanted to be taken seriously as a composer and guitarist.
The Mothers were part of his 'Fun Period', when Frank was perhaps more whimsical.
The rest of the group was a phenomenal mix of misfit virtuosi, and this was his best ensemble. He's actually smiling in these photos!
There was great anticipation that night. The Mothers were one of the most notorious bands for doing weird things live on stage, but no one in the band, let alone the audience, could have foreseen that night's 'entertainment'.
Half-way through the set, this couple got up on stage and started to dance with wild abandon. Stoned out of their minds on LSD, they began gyrating on stage in a lewd manner, grabbing at each other and simulating sex. He ripped at her fish-net stocking and put his face in her crotch. He tore off her striped sweater. As their frenzy increased, a bemused Frank Zappa instructed the band to keep playing, and for the next few minutes the erotic couple was the centre of attention. When the music ended, the very dazed stoners were escorted off the stage to wild cheers from the audience.
