In my opinion, Jackie Lomax is the real fifth Beatle. He was a close boyhood friend of George Harrison, and with George's help, he recorded an outstanding debut album, 'Is This What You Want', and then went into obscurity. The lineup of musicians is astounding, including George, Paul, Ringo, Eric Clapton and Hal Blaine. John Lennon is noticeable by his absence. The songs are instant classics. This is the greatest album The Beatles never made. The Beatles got their song 'Get Back' from this session with Jackie.
He toured North America after his second album, and somehow ended up at Toronto's famous folk and blues club, The Riverboat.
I have no idea why The Riverboat thought Jackie Lomax was a folk artist, but he showed up with a four-piece band of two guitars, drums, and Jackie on bass and vocals.
He performed to an audience of about 15 people, (the regular folkie crowd had never heard of him) and my friend and I sat right in front of Jackie and politely requested songs. We wouldn't let him leave the stage until he had done every song from the first album. It was a great evening, and even Jackie enjoyed the small but dedicated adulation.
